Created in 2006 by Inbra Metais, producer of secondary aluminum located in the city of Itaquaquecetuba, state of São Paulo, Escolinbra outstands for its unprecedented originality. Five teenagers between 15 and 16 years, residents in the suburb of Vila Maria, in the city of São Paulo, attended a training course to become professional scrap buyers.

According to Elder Rondelli, project coordinator, "there is no records that another Brazilian institution or in any other country has a similar activity ". With lectures, visits to scrap deposits, interview with scrap-iron dealers and street collectors, students were able to identify different types of aluminum scrap and other non-ferrous metals. They were also instructed on how metals are used in the aluminum productive process and the importance of recycling and environmental preservation. The training included negotiation practices and students received their certification upon conclusion. Now, they are in an internship program for future hiring.

According to Rondelli, who has 35 years of experience in the aluminum sector and today considers himself a scrap-iron dealer, the Escolinbra pilot project is just the starting point to other initiatives.

"People from different ages are very interested in the course. We still don’t have the necessary structure to receive them all but we have plans to open a specific office for the project in the future. And, who knows, one day we will have a College of Scrap ", says Elder Rondelli.
